Late middle aged. He is the link man, providing light relief.

Late forties. Lively and alert mind. True to King and conscience. Depends on Margaret.

Richard Rich
|
Early thirties. Academic, weak but ambitious.

Duke of Norfolk
|
Late forties. A spokesman for King Henry.

Alice More
|
Late forties. More’s second wife. A great lady who worships society and her husband.

Margaret More
|
More’s daughter. Middle twenties. Beautiful, and of ardent moral fineness.

Cardinal Wolsey
|
One scene only. Old, ambitious. Not a pious priest.

Thomas Cromwell
|
Late thirties. Subtle, serious, antagonist but not intended as a bully. A secretary. Agent of Wolsey.

Chapuy
|
Sixties. A professional diplomat.

Chapuy’s Attendant
|
An apprentice diplomat of good family.

William Roper
|
Early thirties. In love with Margaret, whom he marries.

The King
|
One scene only. A young King (38). Clean-shaven, bright-eyed, graceful and athletic.

A Woman
|
Two scenes. Middle fifties. Self-righteous, self-opinionated, selfish and indignant.

Cranmer
|
Three brief appearances at the end. A controversial figure. Made archbishop of Canterbury to legalise Henry’s divorce
