Curious Savage (Observer)

Review: Curious Savage (May 2006)

Extract from Observer review 25th May 2007 (edits by Dorothy Webb)

‘There was much to savour in the first half of the performance…. the plot sees the three ‘Savages’ commit their stepmother  Ethel to a sanatorium in order to bring her to her ‘senses’ after she begins to squander the millions left to her by her late husband on various causes. With the support of her fellow guests Ethel leads her evil step-children on a merry dance to ensure good overcomes evil.  In small groups the cast were uniformly excellent.  Indeed the gentle natured ‘lunatics’ were superb when working together and provided laughs as well as some touchingly emotional moments.

Sheila Harper is beginning to carve herself something of a niche for playing elderly eccentric characters and did a good job in the lead.

All the ‘guests’ of the sanatorium did a fine job in difficult roles.  Peter Bradbury perhaps being the standout as the debonair but completely bonkers statistician.  Hannah Turnbull shone as the devoted carer Miss Wilhelmina. The conclusion packed a pleasing emotional punch….’
