Last Update 28th December 2007
Quite a lot to cover in this update, but it would be impolite not to start by:
And now back to the updates...
Three - count them, three - new chapters from Curtain Up are now available on-line, concluding Part 1 of the History of The BATS.
Rob Kay has provided us with another show program - this time 1990’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream - plus our first piece of video footage - also from 1990’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream - to open our new BATS Video Archive. Hopefully there will be more to follow subject to copyright restrictions.
Slightly overdue, we have a number of new photos from The Railway Children available in the photo archive; thanks to Peter Bradbury for selecting and supplying them.

And on a sad note, this will be the final update I carry out on the BATS’ web site for the foreseeable future. Due to personal circumstances I will no longer be able to work on the site and am handing control over to another - as yet unnamed - BATS member to take over the running of things here.
It’s been a lot of fun doing this site since its initial launch back in Summer 2004. The site has evolved greatly during this time and there have been many changes - most successful, a few not so much. But ultimately we have produced something that I am very proud of and I know a lot of people have enjoyed.
There are too many people to thank here without it starting to sound like an Oscar ceremony, but I do feel the need to offer special thanks to Peter Bradbury, Jojo Turnbull, and Rob Kay for their fantastic contributions to the site.

Update 21st December 2007
As it is Christmas, we’re offering up a festive double helping of Curtain Up this week- the third chapter and fourth chapter are now available. Don’t worry - there will still be a new chapter next week.
To ensure a boredom-free Christmas, Rob Kay has contributed more to the archives, including a cast photo for The Browning Version (1988), additional photos and commentary for Tom Jones (1987), photos for Deathtrap, and photos and commentary for Romanoff and Juliet. Once again, a big thank you to Rob for his contributions.#
There are updates to the calendar and shows pages and a couple of pieces of news involving club nights and pantomimes.
On behalf of the BATS, I would like to wish each and every one of you a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. And in the immortal words of Tiny Tim from Charles Dicken’s classic A Christmas Carol:
“God Bless Us, Every One!”
Update 17th December 2007
Rob Kay has stepped up once again, with photos from two 1989 show: Murder On The Nile and The Merchant Of Venice, plus a cast shot from 1988’s Merry Wives of Windsor. As ever, a big thank you to Rob for taking the trouble to submit these.
Update 14th December 2007
The second chapter of Curtain Up is now available to read on-line.
Update 7th December 2007
The opening quote and first chapter of Curtain Up are now available to read on-line.
Update 3rd December 2007
As promised earlier, we are making Curtain Up - The History of the Bexhill Amateur Theatrical Society 1935-2000 available to read on-line. The introduction is now up, and a further chapter will be added each Friday. Why release it as a serial? Well, if it was good enough for Charles Dickens then it’s good enough for us. Thank you to Peter for providing me with the source files for this.
And not to feel left out, Rob Kay has kindly provided us with the program for 1989’s The Merchant Of Venice and the promotional flyer for 1990’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Both of these can be accessed via The Rob Kay Archive. Once again, a big thank you to Rob for this.
Update 27th November 2007
Rob Kay has been plundering his BATS archives again, and comes up trumps with a selection of material from the BATS’ past including a number of show programs from around 20 years ago. In honour of this it seemed only fair to open a new wing in the BATS History section which I have taken the liberty of dubbing The Rob Kay Archive. Once again, a big thank you to Rob for the material.
Update 20th November 2007
A handful of updates today:
- there are 2 - that’s right, 2 - audition notices posted. These are for February/March 08’s Verdict by Agatha Christie, and March’s Lent play entitled Night On The Hill.
- There is news about the play selection sub-committee for next year and the BATS’ nominated charity for 2008.
- The calendar has been updated.
- And last, but most certainly not least, Rob Kay has come up trumps with another historical artifact, this time relating to 1988’s production of The Merry Wives of Windsor. Click here to see it for yourself. And a big thank you to Rob for providing this material.
On a related note, Peter Bradbury has provided a full copy of the BATS’ history which will be added to the site chapter by chapter in coming weeks. Hopefully the first chapter should be available in December.
Not strictly BATS-related, but something I’m sure will be of interest to all BATS supporters and residents of the Bexhill/St Leonards/Hastings area.
Due to the re-grading of hospitals there is a real chance that the Conquest Hospital in Hastings could lose its maternity department and related services.
The Friends of the Conquest Hospital have launched a Hands Off The Conquest campaign in an effort to prevent this occuring. The campaign is non-political and seeks simply to ensure that no such cuts are made to services:
